When there is no visible clock at the game, how should the referee keep time?

Use someone else's watch to track time.

Keep official time on his or her watch and stop it when necessary.

The correct approach for a referee when there is no visible clock at the game is to keep official time on their own watch and stop it when necessary. This method is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the game since the referee is responsible for ensuring that the match is played within the official time limits, including any stoppages for injuries, substitutions, or other interruptions.

Using their own watch allows the referee to have precise control over the game's timing. They can manage the match independently of any external sources, ensuring that they adhere to the game’s regulations regarding time management. This practice also helps maintain the flow of the game and avoids confusion among players and coaches regarding game time.

In contrast, relying on an external watch, such as someone else’s, diminishes the referee's control and could lead to inaccuracies. Depending on players or spectators to notify the referee for stopping time undermines the referee's authority and could lead to inconsistencies in timing. Thus, maintaining official time on their own personal watch is the most effective and reliable method for referees in this situation.

Rely on the players to notify him when to stop time.

Ask the spectators to help keep track of time.
